MUMSA IS A FOOD PROGRAM FOR PRE-SCHOOLS IN SAN FRANCISCO. WE TAKE PRIDE IN COOKING DAILY ORGANIC AND MAINLY VEGETARIAN MEALS FROM SCRATCH TO GROWING CHILDREN OF SAN FRANCISCO. I, EMMET GRAHN STARTED MUMSA IN AUGUST 2014 AT THE SCANDINAVIAN SCHOOL IN SAN FRANCISCO WHERE I HAD PREVIOUSLY WORKED AS A TEACHER FOR 3.5 YEARS. COMBINING MY EXPERIENCE FROM THE FOOD INDUSTRY, BEING A TEACHER AND MY GROWING INTEREST IN NUTRITION, HEALTH AND SUSTAINABILITY, MUMSA STARTED TO FORM. I SEE FOOD AND MEAL TIME, SITTING DOWN TOGETHER AROUND A TABLE AS ONE OF THE KEY INGREDIENTS WHEN IT COMES TO CREATING GOOD AND HEALTHY HABITS AROUND FOOD. SOMETHING I LEARNED FROM AN EARLY AGE BACK IN SWEDEN WHERE WE ALWAYS HAD DINNER TOGETHER AND MY MOTHER MADE US TASTY, NUTRITIOUS MEALS WITH FEW INGREDIENTS EVERY DAY.

AS OF NOW, MUMSA PROVIDES BREAKFAST, A WARM LUNCH AND SNACKS TO 187 CHILDREN AND 45 ADULTS DAILY. ALL MEALS ARE COOKED IN-HOUSE, FOOD IS MORE THEN JUST PRODUCE ON A PLATE, IT IS THE SMELLS, THE PERSON IN THE KITCHEN COOKING, THE SETTING OF THE TABLE. IT IS ABOUT THE ROUTINES, TAKING PRIDE IN HELPING GET UTENSILS, ABOUT SEEING THE PRODUCE BECOMING A MEAL, TAKING TURNS BEING SERVED, ASKING FOR SECONDS, TRYING NEW THINGS AND TALKING ABOUT THE FOOD, THE FLAVORS AND THE EXPERIENCE.

AT MUMSA WE BELIEVE THAT FOOD SHOULD NOT JUST TASTE, AND LOOK GOOD TO THE EYE, IT SHOULD ALSO BE GOOD FOR OUR BODIES AND GOOD FOR THE PLANET!

MUMSA - IT'S ALL GOOD

TO GO ALL ORGANIC WAS MUMSAS FIRST GOAL AND STATEMENT. FOR US THERE IS NO OTHER OPTION WHEN IT COMES TO CHILDREN AND FOOD. WHAT THEY EAT AND DRINK, SHOULD BE AS CLEAN AND NUTRITIOUS AS POSSIBLE, THEIR GROWING BRAINS AND BODIES SHOULD HAVE NOTHING BUT THE VERY BEST FUEL. LIVING IN CALIFORNIA WHERE WE HAVE SO MANY ORGANIC AND LOCALLY GROWN OPTIONS, MAKES IT EASY BEING ORGANIC.

WHEN WE STARTED AT THE SCANDINAVIAN SCHOOL WE SERVED MEAT TWICE A WEEK BUT WITH THE DROUGHT IN CALIFORNIA BECOMING MORE AND MORE SEVERE WE STARTED DISCUSSING  WHAT WE COULD CHANGE TO MAKE AN IMPACT. WITH THE DAIRY AND MEAT INDUSTRY USING SO MUCH OF OUR WATERS WE DECIDED TO GO ALL VEGETARIAN. YES, THERE WAS SOME DISCUSSIONS FROM BOTH PARENTS AND TEACHERS IN THE BEGINNING BUT AFTER COMING UP WITH A MENU THAT HAS PROVEN TO BE FILLING AND CONTAINING PLENTY OF PROTEIN, WITHOUT THE MEAT BEING THAT SOURCE, WE GAVE IT A GO. SINCE AUGUST 2015 MUMSA'S MENU IS ALL VEGETARIAN AT THE SCANDINAVIAN SCHOOL, WE HAVE NO WASTE AND HAVE INCREASED OUR ORDERS THE PAST MONTHS SINCE THE CHILDREN EAT MORE AFTER GETTING USED TO THE FLAVORS AND NEW DISHES. SOME FAVORITES ARE THE KALE CHIPS, CREAMY TOMATO LENTIL SOUP, VEGGIE BURRITOS AND CARROT SALAD WITH BASIL AND SUNFLOWER SEED PESTO.

DUE TO COMMON ALLERGIES AMONG CHILDREN OUR MEALS ARE ALSO NUT AND EGG FREE, AND IF SERVED WITH DAIRY OR GLUTEN AN OPTION IS ALWAYS PROVIDED.
